Trinidad and Tobago produced an average of 2.537 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas per day (bscf/d) in 2024, according to full-year data released by the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, with output rebounding in the second half after a historic low in June.

The largest producers were BP Trinidad and Tobago (BPTT) at 1.174 bscf/d, followed by Shell at 586 million cubic feet per day (mscf/d), EOG at 356 mscf/d, and Woodside at 296 mscf/d. Smaller volumes came from Perenco, Denovo, Touchstone, and Heritage Petroleum Company Ltd (HPCL).

Production dipped below 2 bscf/d in June, the lowest in 22 years, as output from BPTT, Shell, and Woodside fell. However, the sector rebounded swiftly, climbing to 2.36 bscf/d in July and peaking in August at 2.692 bscf/d.

BPTT said earlier this month that its Cypre offshore gas project had begun production and is expected to deliver up to 250 mscf/d. It also made a final investment decision (FID) on the Ginger gas development in the first quarter.

Prime Minister Stuart Young said, as Energy Minister in 2024, that the country had about 10 years of gas production left based on less than 12 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven reserves, citing a recent audit.

However, Young had expressed optimism that exploration could unlock 58.84 tcf, citing strong interest from companies that were awarded acreage in bid rounds.

Trinidad hoped to advance cross-border gas projects with Venezuela to boost supply, but these efforts were recently set back. The United States, under the Trump administration, revoked licenses that allowed such collaboration, as part of efforts to pressure the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trinidad also produces oil and condensate, averaging 50,892 barrels per day (b/d) in 2024 (33,426 b/d offshore and 17,465 b/d onshore). The country’s combined oil and gas production has been outpaced on a barrel-of-oil-equivalent basis by neighboring Guyana, which currently produces about 650,000 b/d of oil alone.

Guyana has no commercial gas production yet, but that is expected to change. ExxonMobil will begin transporting 50 mscf/d of gas to shore, likely in 2026, with additional developments expected to push gas output above 1 bscf/d by 2030.
