Two recipients of Noble Corporation’s Cadet Scholarship Programme have shared testimonies on how the initiative has opened doors beyond financial assistance, changing the trajectory of their lives.
Jashwan Somerset, a 2024 scholarship recipient, recalled the relief and surprise of being awarded the opportunity during orientation. “Before receiving a scholarship, you [have] things to worry about, for example, how you would have been able to pay for that scholarship,” he said. “You gotta study, you gotta pay, and you’re going to classes from…nine to five.”
He added, “Everyone was surprised that we gained a scholarship whereby we got to go through the interview… and since then, things have taken a different turn for me.”
Somerset described the scholarship not only as a financial relief but as a platform for long-term growth. “Life didn’t just get easier because of the scholarship, but I have had opportunities that I would never have thought I would be able to get.”
Somerset now serves aboard the Noble Sam Croft, where he says mentorship and teamwork have helped him thrive. “There are persons there that actually help you, to take you to different heights. So this scholarship isn’t just about paying for your education, but it’s about creating different opportunities…you’ll be moving higher than the sky.”
He credited the camaraderie of his team as a key source of support. “I came from a batch of 12, two engine cadets and ten deck cadets… We’ve always worked with a motto…no man left behind…one team, one dream.”
Xavier Fredericks, a 2025 recipient, also shared how the programme has helped him shift from hands-on offshore work to academic advancement. “Before this opportunity, I started my career offshore as a Roustabout…I had the opportunity to serve as the assistant [Derrickman], which was a really nice job. I learned the process of drilling wells, equipment, the hazards, and how safety is the main priority when working offshore.”
He described his early curiosity while onboard: “I could vividly remember asking myself, why are we not sinking when there’s a pool in the center…or why would it be raining on the port side and on the starboard side would be clear as day.”
Fredericks said that transitioning from work to study had its challenges, but the environment made the difference. He expressed gratitude to those behind the initiative. “Your investment is life-changing in more ways than I can express. I’ve been given a foundation to reach new heights.”
Both cadets expressed appreciation, calling attention to the impact of the Noble Cadet Scholarship on their personal and professional journeys.
