Guyanese working on the Stena Carron Drillship offshore the South American country can expect to move up into higher-level positions as they acquire more skills, in keeping with the UK-based company’s policy of ‘promote from within’.

This is according to Regional Manager, Chris Hutton, who told OilNOW in an exclusive interview on Saturday that the future is bright for anyone starting out with the company now, as preparations for first oil in Guyana gets underway.

“We’ll be bringing people at the lower level to start with and then training them up, so I think there is a good future for anybody that starts with Stena at the moment,” he said.

Already 12 Guyanese have secured jobs on the Stena Drillship, with the last batch of 8 departing over the weekend for their first stint on the vessel. Their employment was facilitated by Guyanese oil and gas services company, El Dorado Offshore, in partnership with Trinidad’s Ramps Logistics.

“We’ll be working with the talent we’ve got and we’ll promote from within. That’s always been the ethos we work with and that applies for everywhere we work in the world as well, Mr. Hutton stated.

Stena’s training programme for Guyanese will also intensify in the coming months and years, moving from what is now primarily based offshore, to onshore initiatives.

“Initially it will be on-board…on-the-job training, but as it goes we have a matrix for each position, so we will need to train externally as well as internally, but that will come in time as the guys progress through the months,” he added.

Stena is currently conducting drilling operations offshore Guyana for US super-major, ExxonMobil, and its joint venture partners Hess and Nexen.
