Following a meeting in Suriname on October 19 between Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources Raphael Trotman and his counterpart in Suriname, Dr. Regilio J. Dodson, it was decided that a meeting will be held in Guyana in November at which areas of cooperation identified – including oil and gas – will be further discussed.
At the meeting last Thursday, Mr. Trotman met with Dr. Dodson and Minister of Finance of Suriname, Gilmore Hoefdraad.
They identified areas of cooperation including oil and gas exploration, production and development, and the development of a spill response programme.
Minister Trotman and a team from the Ministry of Natural Resources had been in Suriname for a Chatham House annual meeting from October 13 to 20.
Suriname is one of many countries Guyana is looking to with a view to learning from their experiences and in terms of building its own resilience and capacity. Guyana is also receiving assistance from the United States Coast Guard to finalise its spill response protocols and contingency plan.
