Reinjection of gas has commenced at the Liza Phase 1 development after a period of flaring that lasted longer than anticipated due to challenges encountered with a gas compressor for the Liza Destiny FPSO.

Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Vincent Adams told OilNOW ExxonMobil, operator at the Stabroek Block, was “erring on the side of caution” since the company was left with no choice but to flare longer than anticipated as adjustments were being made to the gas compressor.

“It was a good thing they decided to err on the side of caution” Dr. Adams stated. Based on the information he has received, Dr. Adams said that ExxonMobil is already cutting back on burning excess gas as re-injection has commenced.

He pointed out that what occurred does not amount to a breach of license or permit as the latter allows for flaring in the case of an emergency or for start-up.

Dr. Adams said the EPA is satisfied that the company was doing everything in its power to bring an end to the flaring last week.
