The team on the Liza Destiny Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel has gone over 660 days with no recordable incident. Production Manager at ExxonMobil Guyana, Mike Ryan, says this is an indication that the team is working in setting world class safety performance offshore the South American country.
“The team has been very focused on the flash gas compressor and bringing that flare down to as low as possible and closer to pilot level flare,” Ryan said. “But in the middle of all this, and the challenges that the team has had, they’ve also been relentless on safety and I’m extremely proud of the entire team offshore and the Guyanese Nation should also be extremely proud of folks that are working offshore and Guyanese that are working offshore in setting world class safety performance.”

The Liza Destiny FPSO, built and operated by SBM Offshore, arrived in Guyana in August 2019 and began producing oil in December of that year at the ExxonMobil-operated Stabroek Block.
“When we say a recordable incident, it would mean anything more than a first aid,” Ryan explained. “So, we capture every single incident. So, if someone nips the top of their finger, we record that. That’s a first aid. Anything beyond that like say a stitch or something that requires medical treatment, or an antibiotic or something of that nature is called a recordable.”
He said going over 660 days without one of those incidents is “phenomenal” particularly while the crew has been assiduously working to resolve the issues with the flash gas compressor.
“So, this team is just relentless in making sure that we achieve and deliver on expectations. Making sure people go offshore, they work safe, and they come home to their families safe and maybe, sometimes even better than when they left,” he pointed out.
He said the crew is also working relentlessly in bringing down the flare to pilot level and they won’t give up until this is achieved.

SBM Offshore Operations HSSE Director, Donny Maclean, previously told OilNOW the company launched the ‘Fleet Target Excellence Challenge’, recognizing HSSE and PSM performance across all the company’s offshore units.
“The challenge supports SBM Offshore’s group-wide ‘Target Excellence’ goals of ‘No harm, No leaks, and No defects’ and measures excellent offshore safety and operational performance against both lagging and leading indicators,” Maclean said. “Excellent Days are rewarded through an incentive program.”

He said the challenge encourages positive behaviors towards achieving SBM’s Target Excellence goals and is aligned with and complements ExxonMobil’s goal that ‘nobody gets hurt’.
