Appraisal drilling is underway at the Tripletail-2 well in Stabroek Block, as oil major ExxonMobil continues to assess discoveries and expands operations offshore Guyana.

According to the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the Stena Carron will be used for the campaign. The drilling exercise will also incorporate the use of 27 vessels and is expected to conclude in June.

The well site is situated approximately 104.3 nautical miles (193.203 kilometres) from the coast of Guyana and covers an area of 0.29 square nautical miles (1 square kilometre).

The Tripletail well was discovered back in 2019. Tripletail-1 encountered approximately 108 feet (33 metres) of a high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoir. Tripletail-1, drilled in 6,572 feet (2,003 metres) of water, is located approximately 3 miles (5 kilometres) northeast of the Longtail discovery.

Exxon has been drilling at lower intervals where discoveries have previously been made at the prolific Stabroek Block, and with much success.  Back in June 2021, the company made a discovery at Longtail-3.

Drilling at Longtail-3 encountered 230 feet (70 metres) of net pay, including newly identified, high quality hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs below the original Longtail-1 discovery intervals. The well is located approximately two miles (3.5 kilometres) south of the Longtail-1 well.

Similar success was encountered at  Uaru-2. Drilling at this well encountered approximately 120 feet (36.7 metres) of high-quality oil-bearing reservoirs including newly identified intervals below the original Uaru-1 discovery.

The well was drilled in 5,659 feet (1,725 metres) of water and is located approximately 6.8 miles (11 kilometres) south of the Uaru-1 well.
