The US$30 million (GY$6 billion) Nismes wharf and laydown yard development, conceptualised by GAICO Construction and General Services Inc. is expected to be operational from January 2023. This is according to GAICO’s Managing Director, Komal Singh.

The facility will serve as the land base from which pipeline laying for the Gas-to-Energy project could progress.

Singh has described the project as one that would provide massive opportunities for Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), where it is located.

In an exclusive interview with OilNOW, Singh said GAICO was awarded a contract with Exxon to offer support services to offshore vessels.

“Our development right now, for the wharf development, is in excess of US$12 million,” he said. “We have about six acres lay down area completed. We will have a finger pier that can facilitate the discharge of cargo vessels, international vessels. We will also have a big bay area that can allow discharge of construction material.”

He explained that they plan to complete the first stage of the project by this year’s end, and commission the project in January. Operational 24/7, it is expected that the wharf and lay down area will provide employment to hundreds of people.

According to project documents, the first phase of the project consists of the dry dock, a reinforced concrete wharf, and a laydown yard which will be upgraded to handle heavier loads using geotextile fabric along with white sand, loam and first-grade crusher run. The second phase of the project will see the construction of the finger pier.

For the Gas-to-Energy project, the laying of the 12-inch pipeline, from its landing point at Crane/Nouvelle Flanders on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) to the Wales Development Zone (WDZ), is expected to be completed in 2024.

More than five years after it became one of ExxonMobil’s service providers for its development and exploration operations in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, GAICO, a Guyanese company, has matured considerably.

With over 25 years of experience in Guyana, GAICO Construction is also offering oil spill response services in partnership with a Finnish Company—the Corena Group- whose parent company, Lamor Group, manufactures oil spill response equipment.

Additionally, GAICO has also sealed a partnership with Guyana Shorebase Inc. to further develop waste management capacity, as well as to boost the training and hiring of more locals to service the oil and gas industry.
