A security officer posted at Guyana’s State House, the official residence of the First Family, was stabbed and another relieved of his weapon by an intruder who opened fire at what should be one of the most secure buildings in the country.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning at around 7:30 hrs, in the capital city, Georgetown.

The guard was stationed at the south-eastern guard hut on Carmichael Street.

An official report from the Guyana Police Force read that the perpetrator confronted the security guard and stated, “I want the President.”

He reportedly then drew a knife from his side and stabbed the officer to his neck and body. The guard sustained five stab wounds and is said to be in critical condition at the city’s public hospital.

He then proceeded to disarm another rank and retreated to Carmichael Street, firing several rounds.

Security ranks at the State House returned fire. The suspect was hit and injured in the process. He is currently undergoing surgery for his wounds.

Investigators retrieved a 9MM pistol and seven 9MM spent shells from the scene.

The President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the First Lady and their son are safe. The area around the State House is under heavy police guard as investigations continue.

The Opposition, APNU+AFC, welcomed the news that the First Family is unharmed, and has condemned “in the strongest possible terms a resort to violence in any circumstances.”
