Guyana’s oil production has surpassed 900,000 barrels per day, driven by output from the Stabroek Block developments operated by ExxonMobil Guyana and its co-venturers.
With the industry’s expansion, the notion that Guyanese must look overseas for oil and gas training opportunities is becoming less accurate. Beyond programs offered through institutions such as the University of Guyana and the Guyana Technical Training College Inc. (GTTCI), Guyanese now have access to a wider range of specialized energy qualifications through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), a multi-year government program that offers free virtual scholarships to Guyanese people through deals with universities around the world.
GOAL offers 21 oil, gas, and energy-related programs through partnerships with internationally recognized universities, catering for Guyanese at different stages of their careers, from undergraduate students building foundational knowledge to professionals seeking advanced qualifications in petroleum, energy management, and related fields.
Through the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) in India, qualified professionals can pursue a two-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Oil & Gas or an MBA in Power Management.
Texila American University in Guyana, UNICAF University in Malawi, and the University of East London also offer MBAs specializing in Oil & Gas Management. The two-year programs are available to applicants with a bachelor’s degree, as well as individuals with a two-year diploma or associate degree combined with significant professional experience.
For professionals interested in the future of energy, GOAL’s partnership with Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM) and Structuralia in Spain offers master’s programs covering oil and gas and petrochemical industries, energy technologies, sustainable electricity generation and green hydrogen projects.
The academy also provides access to an MBA in Petroleum & Natural Gas through Shoolini University in India, in partnership with Amity University Dubai.
GOAL’s offerings extend beyond postgraduate studies, with undergraduate courses that provide pathways for Guyanese to develop foundational skills. At UPES, students can pursue degrees in areas including oil and gas operations management, petroleum marketing and business development, natural gas business, energy management, renewable energy, maritime affairs and coastal and marine management.
The courses also include business-focused areas that support the wider oil and gas value chain, such as logistics and supply chain management, international business, operations management and digital business.
