SLB has introduced a seismic interpretation technology designed to help oil and gas companies obtain reservoir rock and fluid information earlier in the exploration and development process.
The QI-FWI™ quantitative interpretation full-waveform inversion solution generates key reservoir properties directly from the seismic wavefield, reducing the need for separate processing and interpretation stages. SLB issued details on the technology on August 18.
Seismic data is commonly used to map underground structures and guide decisions on where to explore and drill. However, additional workflows are often needed to determine the properties of the rocks and fluids within those structures.

The new solution is designed to connect seismic imaging with reservoir interpretation in a single, data-driven workflow.
“It [the QI-FWI solution] compares recorded seismic data with a computer model of the subsurface, then repeatedly adjusts the model until it closely matches the observed wave behavior. The solution analyzes pressure waves and shear waves, called S-waves. These waves move through rock in different ways, providing information about rock density, stiffness and composition. Studying both wave types helps geoscientists better understand changes in rock properties and potential fluid content,” the company said.
SLB said conventional workflows may require separate seismic imaging, amplitude analysis and amplitude-versus-offset inversion stages. Its integrated approach is intended to reduce processing steps and technical handoffs while keeping seismic data, subsurface models and reservoir interpretation more closely connected.
The resulting properties can be checked against well log data, allowing interpreters to compare seismic-derived information with measurements collected inside wells.

During exploration and appraisal, the technology can be used to evaluate prospective areas and characterize reservoir properties. During development, the data can support well planning and reservoir characterization.
The workflow can also be applied to seismic surveys collected at different stages of production, allowing companies to monitor changes in reservoir conditions over time.
SLB is a key contractor to ExxonMobil in Guyana, where the U.S. oil major and its co-venturers are advancing multiple deepwater projects in the prolific Stabroek Block.
The company established a long-term presence in Guyana in 2017 when it invested US$75 million in an oil services facility base in Houston, Guyana.
