Young Guyanese participating in the government’s Youth in Natural Resources Apprenticeship program gained firsthand exposure to the country’s oil and gas infrastructure through a visit to the Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project site at Wales, on the West Bank of Demerara.

In an August 18 LinkedIn post, the project’s contractor, Lindsayca, disclosed that the apprentices were guided through the construction area and introduced to the project’s infrastructure and the process of converting natural gas into electricity.

“Opportunities for young Guyanese to experience projects like GtE are also about inspiring what comes next: the future of energy in Guyana… It was inspiring to see their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and interest in the energy sector,” the company stated.

The apprenticeship program is designed to give young people practical exposure to Guyana’s natural resources sector and help them understand the career opportunities available across the industry. Participants are also expected to interact with professionals and mentors who can provide insight into working in areas such as mining and oil and gas.

As part of its oil and gas component, the program includes an introduction to shorebase logistics. The Ministry of Natural Resources is working with companies such as ExxonMobil and public agencies to provide training and industry exposure to participants.

The ministry intends to continue engaging and training the youths after the formal program ends as they prepare for careers outside the natural resources sector and explore green businesses.

The visit to Wales gave the apprentices exposure to one of Guyana’s largest infrastructure projects. The Gas-to-Energy project includes a 300-megawatt combined-cycle power plant and a natural gas liquids (NGL) facility.

Phase one, which is under construction, is expected to use about 50 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d) of natural gas from the Liza field in the ExxonMobil-operated Stabroek Block. The gas will supply the power plant and NGL facility, which is expected to produce NGLs at about 4,000 barrels per day (b/d)

A second phase is also being planned and could use gas from the Hammerhead field to support another 300-megawatt power plant and increase NGL production by up to 6,000 b/d. The government has received bids for the second-phase facilities but has not yet selected a contractor.
