The Local Content Secretariat (LCS) is coordinating a paid internship pilot program with the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI) to align students in technical fields with sub-contractors along the supply chain to build on skills and experience in the country’s oil sector.

An article in the Q1 2023 edition of Energy Magazine referenced the head of the LCS, Martin Pertab who said that 51 students have already been shortlisted.

“The Secretariat is coordinating an internship with particular focus on engineering (electrical, civil and mechanical) science, and HSSE [health, safety, security and environment]…It is envisaged that this type of interaction with other key stakeholders will continue throughout the year,” Dr. Pertab said.

Major oil support companies like SBM Offshore, Halliburton, and Saipem – which all play a role in developing Guyana’s oil sector – already have ongoing training programs, approved by the LCS.

The Secretariat, according to Dr. Pertab, is still bringing more sub-contractors on board to provide scholarships and other support for local capacity building.

He explained the Secretariat is placing focus on “industry experience”, a key tenet that remains absent.

“Although the local workforce tends to have, for the most part, the requisite technical qualifications… exposure to specific industry requirements is still lacking…,” he noted.
