GYSBI on hiring spree: 76 new employees in one day, more incoming to fill oil sector labor deficit

Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI), in collaboration with Muneshwers Limited and its Joint Venture partners, has hired 76 individuals on the spot during a job fair held at the Everest Cricket Club. The event was part of a broader initiative to fill over 200 vacancies across various operational roles, with additional hires expected in the coming days.

GYSBI said the 76 hires, selected from a pool of 1,765 applicants, encompass a wide range of positions, including Hauler Drivers, Crane Operators, Civil Engineers, and Network Technicians, among others. All newly hired employees will sign their contracts by the end of the week.

The company in a release said among those hired was Narine Dharshand, who will fill the role of Security Supervisor. He expressed his excitement, stating, “I am excited, this is my dream job. I have always wanted to get into the oil and gas sector.” Similarly, Devon Gardener, a 20-year-old Operations Assistant, shared his elation: “It was intimidating to be surrounded by so many persons at the job fair, [but] I was elated that the position was offered to me.”

Rod Carew, who will take on a role in General Maintenance, praised the organization of the event: “This is the best job fair I have been to because of how it was organised. From the advertisement and the event, I can see that the company has high standards, and I want to be part of it.” Another successful candidate, Electrician Deoraj Bijnauth, shared his relief at finally securing a job after multiple attempts: “They saw something in me… I am happy that they saw something in me.”

Robin Muneshwer, Executive Director of GYSBI and Muneshwers Limited, highlighted the company’s unusual decision to hire on the spot, attributing it to the high caliber of candidates. “We [prefer to process] them very carefully and ensure they check out first but…we had some exceptional candidates,” Muneshwer explained. He emphasized the company’s commitment to local content and the importance of providing opportunities for Guyanese workers.

GYSBI’s Human Resource Manager, Lilowtie Chintamani, noted the job fair as the largest ever hosted by the company, underscoring the importance of such events in identifying and hiring qualified individuals. “It has become a difficult task these days to hire persons, and this is what we need in Guyana; job fairs, because we found the numbers came out here. It’s so refreshing to see,” Chintamani stated.

Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, praised the efforts of GYSBI and Muneshwers Limited, noting their role in the government’s broader agenda to provide marketable skills and job opportunities for all Guyanese. 

“GYSBI, of whom the senior partner is Muneshwers, constitutes a partnership between GYSBI and international partners doing world-class work…demonstrating that local content is very real and very achievable by Guyanese companies that demonstrate a commitment to and a capacity for excellence,” Dr. Singh said.
