MODEC is positioning the arrival of the Errea Wittu floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel as the start of a longer-term presence in Guyana, with the company planning to support local skills development and employment as it takes on a continuing role in the vessel’s offshore operations.
The FPSO is MODEC’s first vessel for use in Guyana and is the company’s 18th FPSO/FSO project delivered for operations in South America. The company will provide ExxonMobil with operations and maintenance services for the vessel.
In a press statement issued on August 24, the company stated that “beyond delivering a high-quality offshore asset, it is focused on supporting local development through collaboration with Guyanese stakeholders, knowledge sharing, skills development, and meaningful contributions that create lasting value in-country.”
That effort is already underway through two training programs launched by MODEC Guyana. The initiatives target both recent graduates and experienced professionals seeking to move into offshore operations.
The Offshore Technical Trainee program is designed for graduates from 2024 onward and will train participants in production and maintenance disciplines. MODEC is currently looking for a new batch of 12 trainees for the paid 18-month program, which includes classroom instruction at the Guyana Technical Training College in Port Mourant, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), followed by a year of on-the-job training with MODEC’s technical teams. Interest in the program has been strong, with MODEC receiving more than 2,000 applications for its second trainee intake.
A separate On-the-Job Professional program is aimed at experienced technicians and planning engineers. The two-year program will combine training in Singapore with practical experience in Guyana and offshore operations.
The programs are intended to create pathways to long-term employment with the company while giving participants technical training, mentorship and practical offshore experience.
MODEC said Errea Wittu’s arrival “signals the beginning of MODEC’s longer-term commitment to Guyana.”
The company will deploy the FPSO for ExxonMobil’s Uaru development in the Stabroek Block. The vessel is designed to produce 250,000 barrels of oil per day and is expected to begin production before the end of 2026.
