ExxonMobil has commenced exploration drilling at the Redmouth-1A well in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana. Previously, the company drilled the Redmouth-1 well in the second quarter of 2024.Â
The ‘A’ notation indicates that ExxonMobil has re-spud the well to relocate its top hole.
According to Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department, this operation is being conducted using the Stena Carron drillship and is expected to conclude on November 30, 2024.
The Redmouth and Trumpetfish wells are key to ExxonMobil’s strategy, acting as anchor-hunting wells that target new reserve bases for potential standalone developments. These wells are located west of the significant Liza and Payara discoveries and represent some of Exxon’s most western exploratory efforts in the eastern section of Stabroek Block, where the company has focused its drilling. Trumpetfish was drilled earlier this year.
To date, ExxonMobil has discovered more than 11.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent offshore Guyana. The company holds a 45% stake in the Stabroek Block, with co-venturers Hess holding 30% and CNOOC holding 25%.
So far in 2024, ExxonMobil has announced only one discovery, at the Bluefin-1 well in March.
