The “Guyana: Resilient and One (GRO) initiative” which is being funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation will be launched on Monday, August 6, 2018 at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown.
The initiative, which will be implemented in partnership with the University of Guyana and Arizona State University, is aimed at delivering human development and conservation outcomes in order to secure Guyana’s future for generations to come.
The GRO project is being funded by a US$10 million grant that was provided to Conservation International Guyana (CI-Guyana) by the ExxonMobil Foundation on June 29, 2018.
According to a Press Statement from CI-Guyana, “It is a big part of the work CI-Guyana committed to delivering in our Beyond 20/20 programme strategy from this year until 2025.”
The ExxonMobil Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States which is involved in a number of philanthropic activities aimed at advancing education, as well as promoting women as catalysts for economic development, among other goals.
A statement by the Foundation on the grant divulged that the contribution was made so as “to train Guyanese for sustainable job opportunities and to expand community-supported conservation.” The grant will be disbursed in tranches over a five-year period.
President of the Foundation, Kevin Murphy said that “this partnership will support the highest conservation priorities for the country as well as education and training for sustainable employment,” adding that “it reinforces the government’s objectives as outlined in its Green State Development Strategy and demonstrates the value we place on our long-term relationship with the citizens of Guyana.”
Thumbs up Exxon. Go full speed. The citizens need training opportunities like this one. ?
