Dear Editor,
I felt immense pride reading that Guyanese engineers and technicians in the oil and gas sector are now receiving full training right here at home. This two-phase programme equips participants with the skills to operate and maintain FPSOs offshore Guyana.
In the past, the first phase began at Cape Breton University in Canada before moving to the Guyana Technical Training College Inc. in Port Mourant, Berbice. Bringing the entire process home shows that Guyana can now meet its own workforce needs.
What stands out is the programme’s diversity. It covers areas such as technology, mechanical, operations, and HSSE, while actively encouraging participation from women and talent from all regions. This demonstrates that opportunities in the sector are open and growing. I urge capable Guyanese to apply and prepare themselves for these roles.
I understand, however, that not everyone who applies will be selected immediately. These are critical jobs and competition is strong, but perseverance matters. With continued investment, more spaces will open and more trained professionals will strengthen our workforce.
Already, countries such as Trinidad and Nepal are looking to Guyana for support in their energy sectors. Locally trained citizens will now have the chance to explore opportunities beyond our borders. If we maintain this momentum, Guyana can truly position itself as a global energy leader.
To the new cohort beginning in October, know that you have the support of all Guyanese. Your success is a national achievement. Kudos to the Government of Guyana, Exxon and SBM for making international-standard training accessible at home. This initiative proves that we have the capacity to lead the energy future.
Sincerely,
Samantha Browne
