Saipem has completed the offshore installation of the production platform for the Neptun Deep gas development in Romania’s Black Sea sector.
In a public statement issued on July 23, the company explained that this marks the end of one of the main construction phases under the project’s engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract.
The installation campaign was carried out by Saipem 7000, one of the world’s largest crane vessels. The vessel installed the project’s jacket structure and topside, which form the main components of the offshore production platform.
Neptun Deep is being developed by OMV Petrom as operator and Romgaz, with the project targeting natural gas production from the Domino and Pelican offshore fields. The development is expected to increase Romania’s domestic gas supply and provide additional volumes for regional markets.

Saipem’s EPCI contract, awarded in 2023, includes the production platform, subsea infrastructure, and the installation of a 160-kilometer offshore gas pipeline and fiber-optic cable connecting the platform to the Romanian coast.
The jacket structure installed by Saipem 7000 stands approximately 135 meters high and weighs more than 7,500 tonnes. It was fabricated at Saipem Offshore Construction’s yard in Arbatax, Sardinia, before being transported to the Black Sea.
Following the jacket installation, Saipem 7000 completed the lifting and positioning of the platform’s topside, which weighs approximately 9,000 tonnes and was fabricated at Saipem’s yard in Karimun, Indonesia.

The platform will process gas produced from the Domino and Pelican fields, which are located in water depths of approximately 1,000 meters and 125 meters, respectively. The processed gas will then be transported through the offshore pipeline system installed by Saipem vessels Castorone and Castoro 10.
