bp has started production from the Atlantis Major Facility Expansion project in the U.S. Gulf of America, adding new capacity to one of its longest-producing offshore assets.
The company announced on July 30 that the expansion project will add two new subsea water-injection wells at the Atlantis field, located about 150 miles south of New Orleans. The wells are designed to increase reservoir pressure and recover additional oil from the field.
Atlantis has been producing for several years, and the expansion is expected to extend the asset’s operating life by leveraging existing infrastructure.

“Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated,” said Andy Krieger, senior vice president for the Gulf of America and Canada.
The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, bp said. It is expected to add about 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in gross peak annualized average production, with approximately 5,000 boe/d net to bp.
According to Krieger, bp is “extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region, all while making the most of infrastructure that’s already in place.”

The Atlantis expansion forms part of bp’s wider Gulf of America strategy, which includes the recently sanctioned Kaskida and Tiber offshore developments. Together, the two projects are expected to add 160,000 barrels per day of new oil production capacity in the US offshore region by the end of 2030.
