Energy Guyana has launched a 40-page Special STEM Edition of Energy Magazine, highlighting the people, institutions and programs helping to build Guyana’s future technical workforce.

Titled “Building Guyana’s STEM Future — From Classroom to Career,” the July 2026 publication examines how science, technology, engineering and mathematics education is creating pathways from secondary school and community programs to higher education, technical training and employment.

The magazine is organized around four principal areas: women in STEM, higher education, technical training and community STEM. Its features span geoscience, engineering, robotics, university programs, vocational education, and youth development initiatives linked to Guyana’s expanding energy industry.

In her Editor’s Note, Energy Guyana Editor-in-Chief Gwen Evelyn places the publication within the context of the wider transformation that has followed the start of oil production in Guyana in 2019.

While the country’s offshore resources have attracted international attention, Evelyn argues there is more long term value in the transformation. 

“The story that truly matters…is not happening offshore,” she wrote. “It is happening in classrooms, laboratories, training workshops, and lecture halls across the nation.”

The edition opens with the story of 21-year-old Rasheeda Daniels, who is studying the Research Exploration Engineering program at China Petroleum University in Beijing on a scholarship funded by CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Daniels’ profile explores her interest in earth sciences, the academic and personal preparation required to study overseas, and the importance of communication, teamwork and confidence alongside technical competence.

Another feature profiles Melanie Hudson, Omeka Archer and Luanna Boodie, three young Guyanese women highlighted through ExxonMobil Guyana’s BuildHER campaign. All three entered the company through internships before progressing into full-time positions in geoscience and wells engineering.

The higher-education section examines how the University of Guyana has expanded programs linked to the energy sector. According to outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin, more than 25 programs connected to energy have been introduced over the past six years, covering areas such as petroleum engineering, taxation, accountancy, environmental management, marine studies and supply-chain management.

The magazine also features the University of Guyana’s Regional Accelerator for STEM Students’ Readiness program, known as UG-RASSR. The initiative has reached students from all 10 administrative regions and is designed to expose gifted secondary-school students to advanced STEM education, laboratory work, career guidance and mentorship.

The program’s first cohort recorded strong retention, with 92 students remaining near the end of the five-year cycle and more than 75 choosing to continue in STEM-related fields. Several participants also entered university at unusually young ages.

Technical training is another central focus. The publication examines the work of the Guyana Technical Training College Inc., including its competency-based preparation in electrical, instrumentation, mechanical and production disciplines.

It also explores the role of the Guyana Industrial Training Centre in providing practical instruction in welding, electrical installation, metalwork, mechanics, masonry, plumbing and carpentry. The magazine positions these trades as an important part of Guyana’s STEM ecosystem and a foundation for employment across energy, construction, manufacturing and infrastructure.

Community-based STEM education is represented through STEMGuyana’s learning pods, robotics clubs, coding, artificial intelligence training and online education programs. Its robotics initiatives are helping students develop research, analytical, problem-solving and collaborative skills, with some former participants progressing into offshore remotely operated vehicle operations.

The edition closes with the journey of Raphel Persaud, whose participation in SBM Offshore Guyana’s mousetrap-car competition helped deepen his interest in engineering. Persaud is now pursuing an associate degree in petroleum engineering at the University of Guyana with support from SBM Offshore Guyana’s Education Support Programme.

Across the publication, a recurring message is that technical knowledge must be supported by communication, collaboration, leadership, resilience and the willingness to learn from setbacks.

Evelyn concluded that Guyana’s capacity to manage and lead its natural-resource development is being built “one student, one skill, and one act of courage at a time.”
