Guyana may have already produced more than one billion barrels of oil since offshore production began in December 2019, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge said.
Routledge made the disclosure on Tuesday during the launch of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo 2027 in Georgetown, as he reflected on the rapid development of the country’s offshore oil industry.
“Depending on how you count the barrels, we may already have surpassed a billion barrels of production,” Routledge announced.
He described the milestone as a significant achievement for Guyana, coming about 11 years after the first commercial oil discovery was made offshore in May 2015.
“Quite a feat in such a short space of time,” Routledge said.
Guyana began producing oil from the ExxonMobil-operated Stabroek Block in December 2019. Routledge said current production is around 900,000 barrels per day, supported by four floating production, storage and offloading vessels built and operated by SBM Offshore.
He expects another major milestone before the end of 2026, with national production projected to move above one million barrels per day.
“By the end of this year… we anticipate by the end of this year, that Guyana will push beyond the frontier of a million barrels of production [per day],” Routledge said.
Routledge said the pace of development has been supported by collaboration among ExxonMobil, its co-venturers, the government, the private sector, and business support organizations.
“Well, it’s been the collaboration. I think that has been the foundation of what we’ve achieved,” he said.
He said the development of Guyana’s petroleum resources is intended to support both global energy demand and benefits for the country.
“These are Guyana’s resources, albeit they are for the benefit of feeding the demand in the world for energy,” Routledge said.
ExxonMobil is again the principal sponsor of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo. Routledge said the event, scheduled for February 2027, will provide a forum for discussions on the next phase of Guyana’s energy development.
