ExxonMobil Guyana has commenced exploration drilling operations at the Bluefin-1 well site, situated within the Stabroek Block of Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, as announced by Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department. This move comes as part of the company’s vigorous exploration campaign within the Stabroek Block, where it has already discovered over 11 billion oil-equivalent barrels.

According to the regulator, the Stena Drillmax will be actively engaged in drilling activities at the Bluefin-1 site, from September 15 to October 31, 2023. Notably, the Bluefin-1 exploration well is located close to the Suriname border, and lies six miles southwest of the Haimara-1 discovery, which is currently being appraised for a potential gas development.

ExxonMobil got approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in July, to drill up to 35 exploration and/or appraisal wells over the next few years.
