The Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) were deemed the talismans for their home country’s rise on the global scene by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited President, Alistair Routledge as he announced the company’s full sponsorship for the 2023 team

“We are so excited to be sponsors for the Guyana Warriors cricket team. This is a partnership that has been forged on the spirit of partnership, one where we have very aligned values…our commitment to compete, our commitment to community, our commitment to teamwork,” he said.

The GAW, after a stunning run, are back home to compete in the Guyana leg of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 with their first match against the Jamaica Tallawahs on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the National Stadium.

In a stellar performance, the team sits at the top of the scoreboard, remaining unbeaten and excited to take home the title and coveted trophy in the finals.

Routledge commented: “We have been through some of the challenges of the last few years. We saw the perseverance of the team playing last year when they arrived in the country with not one win and they made it all the way through to the eliminations. This year, we are so happy to see the team arrive undefeated so our expectations are very high.”

“We know how difficult the game is. We know we have been here before so we have to stay strong all the way to the end,” he added.

After facing off the Tallawahs, Guyana will then play against the Saint Lucia Kings on September 14, Trinbago Knight Riders on September 16, and Barbados Royals on September 17.

The game against Trinidad is highly anticipated since the two are long-standing rivals. The team is in second place with an equal number of victories, but two losses. Trinidad has won the title four times. Guyana has a reputation for performing well up to the finals, where it delivers disappointing results. Guyana has never won CPL.

The playoffs will begin with the first Eliminator on September 19 followed by the Qualifier One on September 20 and Qualifier Two on September 22. The final is set for September 24.

ExxonMobil is the operator of the Stabroek Block, alongside Hess and CNOOC.
