Can Guyana’s schools build digital classrooms without reliable electricity?

Classrooms today look very different from the ones many Guyanese students knew a generation ago. 

Instead of relying only on chalkboards and textbooks, schools are being equipped with computers, internet connections, and digital platforms designed to enhance how students learn. 

But behind every digital classroom is the need for something less visible — a reliable supply of electricity.

As Guyana expands its investment in technology in schools, the country’s ability to provide stable and affordable power will become just as important as the devices being placed inside classrooms.

The Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project, which is expected to cut Guyana’s electricity costs by 50%, could help create the conditions needed for digital learning to expand by increasing power supply and improving affordability. 

Building a digital classroom network

Guyana’s Ministry of Education has increased access to information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure through the construction and upgrading of computer laboratories, the installation of school-wide wired and wireless networks, and the procurement of computers and network equipment. 

Brickdam Secondary School and East Ruimveldt Secondary School, for example, have received classrooms equipped with digital teaching tools that support interactive instruction and enhance the teaching and learning experience. 

In May 2026, Abram Zuil Secondary School received Guyana’s first automatic computer-aided design (AutoCAD) laboratory, giving students access to more than 20 high-performance laptops, an interactive smart screen and industry-standard AutoCAD software.

Taking digital learning beyond the coast

The push for digital education has also focused on communities outside Georgetown and other major towns.

Through the Hinterland/Riverain Television and Satellite Project, the government distributed 748 televisions, 153 solar panels and 399 satellite dishes to 204 primary schools to improve access to educational content.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips told the National Assembly in February 2026 that 97% of schools are connected to high-speed internet services exceeding 200 megabits per second (Mbps).

Where Gas-to-Energy fits in

Digital classrooms depend on a reliable electricity supply to operate computers, charge devices, run interactive screens, maintain internet equipment and support essential systems such as lighting and cooling. Without dependable power, even the most advanced learning spaces can face interruptions.

This makes developments in Guyana’s electricity sector important for the country’s digital education ambitions. 

The GtE project will transport natural gas from the ExxonMobil-operated Stabroek Block to an integrated gas processing facility at Wales on the West Bank of Demerara, where it will support a new power generation system.

Gas from the Liza field will fuel a 300-megawatt combined-cycle power plant, while a natural gas liquids (NGL) plant will process approximately 4,000 barrels per day of NGLs.

Once operational, the project is expected to more than double Guyana’s electricity generation capacity and reduce reliance on imported heavy fuel oil. A second GtE phase is also planned.
