SBM Offshore Guyana is set to host a ‘Let’s Talk Local Content’ seminar today at the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, in Georgetown.
The seminar, scheduled for 13:00hrs in the main ballroom of the Guyana Marriott Hotel, presents an opportunity for stakeholders and local businesses to learn about the company’s procurement process, compliance, local content, and supply chain opportunities.
Remarks will be delivered by the Director of the Local Content Secretariat, Dr. Martin Pertab, Senior Petroleum Coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Bobby Gossai Jr., among other officials. There will also be a panel discussion involving key local stakeholders and suppliers with whom SBM Offshore Guyana has engagements.
General Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, Martin Cheong, during an interview on Energy Perspectives this week, said its critical for the company to engage local businesses to provide services that are needed for its in-country operations.

He said SBM Offshore Guyana’s dedication to building local capacity is further demonstrated through its comprehensive training programs. Cheong described the Graduate Engineer Program and the SBM Trainee Technician Program, which has helped to cultivate a skilled Guyanese workforce for the oil and gas industry.
About the Graduate Engineer’s program, Cheong said, “We’re [on] to the third batch of graduates, and they go on six months training in the Netherlands and six months in Singapore… and then they come back and take up roles within the organization.”
The company is also heavily involved in the Guyana Technical Training College, still in development. The first phase was commissioned earlier this month – an FPSO facility simulator called FacTor. Its first cohort of students is from SBM Offshore’s Graduate Trainee program.
Cheong also conveyed that sustainability and adherence to global standards form another pillar of SBM Offshore Guyana’s operational philosophy. He shared insights into the company’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly through projects like the Green Farm Initiative. “Our sustainability footprint is guided based on the fact that SBM has adopted nine of the UN SDG programs,” Cheong remarked.
