ExxonMobil Guyana and SLB have achieved a global industry first with the Hammerhead-4 appraisal well.
According to ExxonMobil Guyana’s 2024 Annual Report, the well was the first in the world to use SLB’s Ora reservoir fluid sampling tool to successfully collect high-quality oil and water samples using an advanced drilling technique.

SLB’s website said Ora is an advanced wireline formation testing platform with reservoir fluid sampling capabilities. It enables precise, real-time measurements and high-resolution data for improved reservoir and fluid analysis. Its dual-flowline design also allows efficient fluid extraction, even in challenging reservoir conditions.
Hammerhead-4 was drilled in September 2023 by the Stena Carron drillship.

Hammerhead is expected to anchor ExxonMobil’s seventh oil development offshore Guyana. The project targets 180,000 barrels per day of oil production. ExxonMobil is also considering bringing some of the associated gas to shore. This would complement gas from the Liza field, expected to reach shore by mid-2026.
First oil from Hammerhead is projected for 2028.
“Appraisal drilling of Hammerhead-4 is a crucial step in further understanding the resources present,” ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge had said. He added that the information from Hammerhead-4 will help determine how much the project can produce and how the associated gas might be used.
ExxonMobil is the operator of the Stabroek Block.
