ExxonMobil Guyana is continuing exploration drilling at the Barreleye-3 well in the Stabroek Block, a notice from Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department said.
According to the notice, drilling, carried out by the drillship Stena Carron, was scheduled to begin on December 30.
Barreleye was discovered in 2022 and is located about 20 miles southeast of the Liza field, Guyana’s first offshore oil development. Exxon reported roughly 230 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing sandstone at the well.
ExxonMobil Guyana has already drilled the Barreleye-2 appraisal well, which included a drill stem test, and is now proceeding with Barreleye-3 as it continues to evaluate the discovery. The company’s President, Alistair Routledge, said in October that the area is technically complex and requires additional testing to determine the best development approach.
ExxonMobil operates the Stabroek Block with a 45% stake, alongside co-venturers Hess with 30% and CNOOC with 25%. The consortium has made oil and gas discoveries estimated at around 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent since its first commercial find offshore Guyana in 2015.
