ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) does not plan to seek a renewal of the Canje Block licence offshore the South American country, according to Alistair Routledge, the company’s President.
During a press conference on March 19 at Exxon’s office in Ogle, East Coast Demerara, Routledge disclosed, “We believe we exceeded the commitments that were laid out in the petroleum agreement and then prospecting license.”
The exploration licence for the Canje Block expired in February 2026.
He explained that the company’s assessment of the acreage influenced the decision. “Our evaluation is that remaining prospectivity… is not competitive in our portfolio,” he said. “We do not plan to try to pursue that acreage for any renewal.”
Currently, the Canje Block is operated by ExxonMobil with a 35% stake. Co-venturers include TotalEnergies with 35%, JHI Associates with 17.5%, and Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas with 12.5%.

ExxonMobil previously drilled three exploration wells in the block — Bulletwood-1, Jabillo-1 and Sapote-1.
Routledge said he would not comment on the position of the other partners. “I won’t speak on behalf of our partners in the block. It’s for them to determine whether they would like to pursue that or not.”
