South America’s rising oil star, Guyana, is looking to secure visa-free travel to the European Schengen Area which comprises 27 countries that have officially abolished all passport and border control measures at their mutual borders.

President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, discussed Guyana’s nomination letter for visa-free status with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Tanja Fajon, on the sidelines of the European Union—Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU—CELAC) in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday.

They discussed the possibility of an interim in-country processing of Schengen visa applications. The most convenient way for Guyanese to apply for a Schengen visa presently is by visiting the Dutch Embassy in Suriname.

The talks also included exploring potential trade collaboration between the two countries, especially in agriculture, clean and renewable energy.

The United Kingdom lifted the visa requirement for Guyanese travelers to spend up to six months in the country, in October last year. The private sector is also advocating for Canada to grant visa-free travel for Guyanese nationals.

According to the Henley & Partners Passport Index, Guyana’s passport is ranked 61st in the world, with visa-free travel (or visa on arrival) to 88 countries.
