Guyana established the Guyana Technical Training College Inc. (GTTCI) to prepare Guyanese technicians for jobs in the country’s growing oil and gas industry. The training institution delivers specialized technical education aligned with offshore petroleum operations and supports the country’s local workforce development strategy.

What GTTCI is:

The GTTCI is a technical training institution focused on preparing Guyanese for careers in offshore oil production and related industrial operations. Programs are designed to meet international industry standards and equip trainees with the skills required to operate and maintain complex production systems used in offshore facilities.

Where the college is located:

GTTCI’s campus is located at Port Mourant in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). The facility sits on approximately 18.4 acres and includes classrooms, workshops, laboratories, and administrative buildings designed for hands-on technical training.

When the training centre opened:

The training centre was officially commissioned in February 2026, marking the start of in-country oil and gas technician training at the facility.

Why the training centre was created:

Guyana’s offshore oil discoveries created demand for technicians capable of operating and maintaining offshore production systems. GTTCI was established to help build a local workforce for the petroleum sector and reduce reliance on overseas technical training. The institution forms part of Guyana’s broader local content strategy aimed at increasing participation of Guyanese in the oil and gas industry.

Who is involved in the initiative:

The training initiative is supported through collaboration between the Government of Guyana and Stabroek Block co-venturers ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

What programs are offered:

GTTCI focuses on technical disciplines required in offshore petroleum operations.  Training areas include:

  • Production Operations
  • Mechanical Maintenance
  • Electrical Systems
  • Instrumentation

The college offers an 18-month Advanced Diploma in Oil and Gas, combining classroom instruction with practical technical training.

How the training works:

The training program combines theoretical instruction with practical learning in workshops and laboratories. A key component is the Facility Simulator, which replicates the operation of a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

The simulator includes a control room and operational systems that allow trainees to practice troubleshooting, calibration, and process monitoring similar to what is required on offshore installations.

Roles graduates can fill:

Graduates are trained for technical roles that support offshore production systems. These include:

  • Production Technician
  • Mechanical Technician
  • Electrical Technician
  • Instrumentation Technician
  • Cargo Operator
