Two Guyanese professionals have built careers supporting the country’s offshore oil and gas industry through technical training and field experience with TechnipFMC. Micheal Douglas and Steven Yussuf shared their career journeys for the STEM special edition of Energy Magazine. Their experiences span Guyana, Brazil, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Both men began as Technical Services Personnel (TSP). They later progressed into management roles supporting TechnipFMC’s operations in Guyana. Douglas joined the company in 2018 as a TSP apprentice. He spent his first year in Brazil, where he helped assemble and test equipment for Guyana’s Liza field. He then worked in Trinidad and Tobago for two years. His duties included site receival testing on equipment assembled in Brazil. He subsequently advanced to Lead TSP.
Douglas later moved into an installation engineering role. This brought him offshore Guyana, where he worked on equipment installation. He now serves as TSP Manager at TechnipFMC’s Guyana base. Douglas said he has managed the company’s diverse offshore team for the past three years.
“My experience in Guyana has shown me how our work creates real opportunities by building capability, growing local teams, and reinforcing our long-term commitment to the region,” he said.
Douglas encouraged young professionals to remain committed as they pursue career opportunities. “Your attitude defines your future. Stay curious, work hard, and opportunities will follow your determination and passion,” he said.
Yussuf began his career in 2019 as an offshore TSP. He first travelled to Brazil for training before being stationed in Trinidad and Tobago. He said the assignment exposed him to experienced professionals and helped prepare him to support TechnipFMC’s expansion in Guyana.
Yussuf later returned home and helped establish the company’s local base. He said the team grew from three people to 40 in about two years. “Through the projects we deliver in Guyana, I have seen how we create opportunities that strengthen both our teams and the region’s future,” Yussuf said. He credited his advancement to his willingness to learn and remain receptive during offshore operations.
“A willingness to learn and maintain an open mind during operations has enabled me to acquire the skills necessary to progress from doing the actual work to now,” he added.
