SBM Offshore’s Chief Executive Officer, Øivind Tangen confirmed that the upcoming Jaguar floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) will be executed with the same team and expertise that handled the Liza Unity FPSO.
“We inherently bring all the learnings from [Liza] Unity and the execution of [Liza] Unity into that project,” said Tangen said in an Oct. 4 interview with OilNOW. Tangen shared that the Jaguar project is nearing the end of its engineering phase, with all long-lead items ordered and detailed design reviews underway. The FPSO is being built for Guyana’s Whiptail development.

Construction has advanced, with the initial steel cutting in module yards having already started. The Multi-Purpose Floater (MPF) 5, currently in China’s SWS yard, is nearing completion and will move to Singapore at the start of the new year. Tangen expressed confidence in the project’s progress, describing it as “on track” and “fantastic.”
The Jaguar FPSO, set to be the sixth unit deployed offshore Guyana, will initially produce 250,000 barrels per day (b/d). This addition will push Guyana’s total oil production beyond 1.3 million b/d.
The execution approach mirrors the success seen with earlier FPSOs like Liza Destiny and Unity. The Liza Destiny, originally designed for 120,000 b/d, now produces 150,000 b/d after debottlenecking activities. Its capacity could reach 270,000 b/d with further adjustments. In 2021, the Destiny ranked among SBM Offshore’s top units globally for safety.
