Dear Editor,

I believe that oil-producing CARICOM States must remain alert to evolving geopolitical developments in the wider region, particularly those involving Venezuela and increased engagement by major global powers.

Such developments, whether political or diplomatic, can have broader implications for regional stability and energy security. Recent international attention surrounding Venezuela and its leadership has once again highlighted how oil-rich nations often become focal points in global affairs.

These situations serve as reminders that energy resources can attract external pressure, making vigilance essential for neighboring states.

Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, as CARICOM’s primary oil and gas producers, must therefore take careful note of these developments. Each of these countries has strategic energy interests that contribute significantly to national revenue, employment, and long-term development planning

For Guyana in particular, proximity to Venezuela adds an additional layer of importance to regional awareness. Monitoring diplomatic, security, and economic signals is necessary to ensure that Guyana’s oil sector remains protected from external disruptions or uncertainty.

Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, though differing in scale and maturity of their energy sectors, also have much at stake. Continued coordination, information-sharing, and collective discussion through CARICOM can help ensure that regional energy interests are managed responsibly and sustainably. At the same time, it is important that all international engagements involving the Caribbean respect international law, national sovereignty, and peaceful cooperation.

Upholding these principles will help ensure that Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago can continue to develop their energy sectors within a stable and predictable regional environment.

Sincerely,

Blane R Bunbury
