Dear Editor,
As a Guyanese watching the country’s oil and gas sector grow, I am encouraged to see the efforts to prepare our people for the opportunities it brings. Too often, we hear only criticism, but I believe there is real work happening to build a workforce that can support this expanding industry.
Government investment in technical and vocational training, along with greater emphasis on science and technology in schools, is a step in the right direction. At the same time, private-sector companies are playing their part through training programmes and internships that provide Guyanese with practical skills and exposure to industry standards.
Editor, what stands out is that the focus is no longer just on offshore jobs. There is growing recognition that oil and gas create opportunities across logistics, construction, maintenance, environmental services, and supply chains, all areas where Guyanese can and should play a leading role.
However, there is still more to be done, but the direction is promising. If the government and the private sector continue to work together, oil revenues can be turned into lasting skills that benefit workers long after our oil is gone. Preparing our people is how we make sure this boom truly works for Guyana.
Sincerely,
Jessica Campbell
