Dear Editor,

Concerns about public health remain at the forefront of everyone’s mind. With the re-emergence of COVID-19 in Guyana, the Ministry of Health is urging the public to take all necessary precautions. It is equally crucial that the oil and gas sector and its key stakeholders continue to maintain and strengthen robust health and safety systems, particularly to protect employees operating in offshore environments.

I am confident that ExxonMobil Guyana has already implemented strong and effective measures to ensure the safety of everyone involved in its operations. ExxonMobil’s proven track record, including its comprehensive COVID-19 health protocols and meaningful contributions to community health during the height of the pandemic, demonstrates its commitment to both its workforce and the wider public.

However, I wish to make a direct appeal to the offshore workforce: please remain vigilant and continue to take all necessary precautions to protect yourselves and those around you. Personal responsibility, alongside company protocols, is key to preventing a repeat of the challenges we faced during the previous outbreak.

With industry leaders such as ExxonMobil, Hess, and CNOOC at the forefront, the oil and gas sector in Guyana is in capable hands. While the potential for public health risks still exists, I believe we are now far better prepared to manage them effectively.

Through cooperation, vigilance, and a shared commitment to safety, we can once again overcome this public health challenge.
