SBM Offshore observes 11th Life Day anniversary with emphasis on Hand Safety

SBM Offshore marked its 11th annual Life Day on May 28, focusing on hand safety and overall workplace wellbeing. The event, themed “Every day is Life Day,” was celebrated globally and included a gathering at the Guyana Marriott Hotel.

Martin Cheong, General Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, addressed the event, stating “In our fast-paced industry, prioritizing health and wellness alongside physical safety should be a personal goal for each of us.”

Life Day is integral to SBM Offshore’s ‘LIFE 365’ campaign, aimed at fostering behavioral change and process awareness. The event was live-streamed to the Liza Destiny, Liza Unity, and Prosperity floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels and trainee technicians in Canada.

ExxonMobil Guyana’s Production Manager, Huzefa Ali, praised SBM Offshore’s safety-first approach, emphasizing the importance of ensuring employees return home safely each day. “When we prioritize safety, we demonstrate our commitment to each person’s physical and mental well-being,” Ali noted.

Bobby Gossai Jr., Senior Petroleum Coordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources, underscored the importance of comprehensive safety in the petroleum industry. He remarked, “Life Day is about the entire spectrum of safety, of management, and of the entire continuation and sustainability of the livelihood of the industry itself.”

Gweneth King, Occupational Health and Safety Consultant, delivered the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Labour. She emphasized collaborative efforts in accident prevention and climate change challenges. “By embracing our joint responsibility, we can build a safer, healthier and more sustainable future for all workers,” King said.

Vurlon Mills, founder of the Vurlon Mills Football Academy, shared tips on preventing hand injuries in sports, advising, “[By] taking safety precautions such as wearing your protective gear, warming up, use of proper technique, listening to your body, you can reduce the risk of injuries and play sports safely.”

The event featured a blood drive, medical checkups, and wellness services. SBM Offshore also held an exhibition with local sustainability partners.
