Suriname’s offshore basin is being shaped by a mix of international operators and partners, with exploration wells drilled across multiple contract areas, according to a February 2026 map from Staatsolie.

The acreage sits offshore within the Guyana-Suriname basin, where production sharing contracts signed between 2012 and 2025 define who is operating and where drilling is taking place.

Open acreage accounts for the largest share at 74,955 square kilometers. It remains unlicensed, with no operator, no partners, and no wells identified.

Activity is concentrated across licensed offshore blocks held by companies including TotalEnergies, PETRONAS, Shell, Chevron and PetroChina, alongside partners such as APA Corporation, Hess, QatarEnergy and Staatsolie.

Block 58, operated by TotalEnergies with APA and Staatsolie, spans 5,833 square kilometers and shows the highest concentration of drilled wells on the map, including Maka Central-1, Sapakara West-1, Kwaskwasi-1, Keskesi East-1 and Baja-1. Two of these discoveries are supporting plans for Suriname’s first offshore oil development, GranMorgu

Block 52, operated by PETRONAS with Staatsolie, covers 4,750 square kilometers. The map identifies wells including Roystonea-1 and Sloanea-1, with the block under assessment for a possible development.

Elsewhere, drilling is spread across several contract areas.

Block 42, operated by Shell with Hess and Chevron, covers 6,181 square kilometers and shows drilling activity within its boundaries.

Block 48, operated by PETRONAS, spans 3,214 square kilometers and contains a drilled well.

Block 66, operated by PETRONAS with Staatsolie, spans 3,392 square kilometers and includes a drilled well.

Block 63, also operated by PETRONAS, covers 5,422 square kilometers and shows exploration activity.

Block 65, operated by Shell with QatarEnergy and KUFPEC, spans 5,019 square kilometers and contains a drilled location.

Block 10, operated by Chevron with PETRONAS, QatarEnergy and Staatsolie, covers 2,972 square kilometers and shows a well.

Block 9, operated by PETRONAS with Chevron, QatarEnergy and Staatsolie, spans 2,675 square kilometers and shows drilling activity.

Blocks 14 and 15, operated by PetroChina with Staatsolie, cover 2,801 and 2,544 square kilometers respectively, with wells identified in both areas.

Blocks 8 and 6, operated by TotalEnergies with QatarEnergy and Staatsolie, cover 1,401 and 1,172 square kilometers, each showing at least one drilled location.

Block 5, operated by Chevron with QatarEnergy and Staatsolie, spans 2,203 square kilometers and includes a well.
