TotalEnergies Suriname has submitted draft environmental impact statements to Suriname’s National Institute for Environment and Development (NIMOS) for offshore oil exploration.
The company plans to conduct geophysical surveys in shallow water Blocks 6 and 8, located 90 km offshore in depths of 30 to 80 metres.
The blocks lie west of Suriname’s Shallow Offshore area, between the deepwater discoveries in Block 58 and existing onshore production fields.
The surveys aim to assess seabed and sub-seabed conditions and identify potential geohazards that could affect future subsea installations and drilling, according to TotalEnergies.
Data acquisition is scheduled for the first half of 2026.
Staatsolie, TotalEnergies Suriname and QatarEnergy signed production sharing contracts for offshore blocks 6 and 8 on May 8, 2023. TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy have been granted exploration, development, and production rights. Staatsolie also has a 40% participation through its subsidiary Paradise Oil Company (POC).
TotalEnergies operates Block 58 in Suriname with a 50% interest, while APA Corporation holds the other half. TotalEnergies approved a US$10.5 billion final investment decision (FID) for the GranMorgu project in Block 58, targeting the Sapakara and Krabdagu oil discoveries. First oil is expected in 2028.
