PARAMARIBO, SURINAME TotalEnergies has identified additional wells that will be drilled to sustain plateau production at its landmark GranMorgu project offshore Suriname, according to Javier Rielo, the company’s Senior Vice President, Americas.

“We have already identified wells. We are very near some places to explore,” Rielo said during a presentation at the Suriname Energy, Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS). “I think that will keep the plateau production in GranMorgu for several, several years, more than 10 years. We’ll see.”

He also suggested the possibility of multiple GranMorgu-type developments: “Probably there will be more than one GranMorgu.”

The GranMorgu development is being executed in Block 58, where TotalEnergies is partnered with APA Corporation and Staatsolie. The project includes a US$10.5 billion investment and a high-capacity FPSO to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day from 30 wells.

“The project will bring big economic value for Suriname,” Rielo said.

He confirmed that TotalEnergies is also active in deeper zones. “We are currently drilling a well in deeper jobs, joining Block 64. I think in 30 days we’ll have some news,” he noted. In addition, the company is pursuing opportunities in Blocks 6 and 8, located south of Block 58, where it is “looking to release some new resources.”

As of now, the overall GranMorgu project progress is around 20%, with FPSO construction about 40% complete. “The hull has already been constructed and delivered a couple of weeks ago,” Rielo said.

A logistics base for the development has been contracted and visited by the TotalEnergies team. “I could see the professionalism of the Surinamese and how they manage these steps,” he said, noting the company’s aim to cluster contractors in one central location.

The first oil is expected in 2028, and according to Rielo, the project will generate approximately 6,000 jobs. “Jobs will be created directly in the country,” he stated.

He closed by calling on industry players to deepen their engagement with Suriname: “I encourage you to discover this country and its people, because it is a country that is full of good opportunities for our industry.”

SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward hull, Multipurpose Floater C (MPF C), will serve as the base of the FPSO. The hull was reserved in June 2023 and delivered in February 2025.

It was fabricated by China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI). BOMESC Offshore Engineering Company Limited and STS VOF will build the topside modules. COSCO Shipping Heavy Industries will also support the topside construction.
