Head of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM), Robert Biedroń, expressed optimism this morning that Guyana’s polls would unfold peacefully, as his team of observers fanned out across the country.

Speaking with reporters at the St. Gabriel’s Primary School in Georgetown, Biedroń said, “It’s a very important day for Guyanese democracy, and I’m very proud that the European Union’s Election Observation Mission is present here during this E-Day.”

He noted that 50 EU observers have been deployed across all regions, monitoring polling stations from the opening of the polls through the tabulation of results. “We are gathering information and transmitting our findings to our statistical hub in Georgetown, which will give us a very clear picture from the voting process from all the regions of the country,” he explained.

Biedroń stressed that the mission’s role is strictly impartial: “We are here to observe the elections. We provide impartial, factual reports… our presence aims to contribute to a better understanding of the electoral processes and, over time, support its improvements.”

While declining to comment on the specific polling stations he visited, he assured the public that all findings would be shared transparently. “Our mandate does not allow us to comment while the process is ongoing, but you will be informed when all the voting is finished,” he said.

The mission head emphasized the EU’s hopes for a calm atmosphere on Election Day. “We really keep fingers crossed for a peaceful and joyful election, a day to celebrate democracy, where voters are able to make their free and well-informed choices,” Biedroń stated.

He announced that a press conference will be held on September 3 at the Pegasus Hotel to present preliminary findings, with a full report and recommendations expected within two months.
