Americas Market Intelligence (AMI) has once again placed Guyana in a category of its own, labeling it as “great” in its 2025 economic forecast for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The ranking underscores Guyana’s exceptional economic expansion, driven by its booming oil industry. “Guyana continues to defy expectations, achieving levels of growth that most emerging markets can only dream of,” AMI stated in its latest report released in January.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has designated Guyana a high-income country as of January 2025. GDP per capita is projected to exceed US$30,000 this year, a sharp rise from its low-income status just six years ago. AMI highlighted the speed of this transformation, noting, “The Asian Tigers needed decades to accomplish what Guyana has done in under ten years. The driving force is clear—oil.”

Oil remains the backbone of Guyana’s economic surge.

“While political uncertainty and governance concerns persist, they have yet to derail the country’s economic trajectory,” the firm noted. A narrow parliamentary majority, independent media, and a functioning legal system provide a degree of oversight in government dealings with ExxonMobil and other investors, AMI added.

AMI projects that Guyana’s GDP growth will moderate to 15% in 2025 as the economy diversifies into infrastructure and consumer-driven sectors. However, the upcoming 2025 general elections (date to be announced) introduce uncertainty.

“Elections in Guyana have historically been flashpoints for division, and 2025 will be no exception,” AMI warned. “But if the country can navigate the political turbulence without unrest, it will prove that its governance is evolving alongside its economy.”
