British High Commissioner Jane Miller has declared that “Guyana is a land of opportunity” for UK businesses.

Speaking ahead of the International Business Conference (IBC) 2024, Miller underscored the vast potential for UK companies in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, eco-tourism, and renewable energy.

She cited the UK Export Finance-backed Maternal and Pediatric Hospital in Ogle as a testament to the UK’s ongoing commitment to essential infrastructure development in the region.

She further emphasized that the UK’s approach is focused on long-term investment.

“We are not just here to sell and leave. We are looking for long-term relationships and partnerships that benefit both UK businesses and the local economy in Guyana,” Miller added.

Guyana, experiencing a robust economic expansion fueled by an oil boom, continues to attract global attention. The discovery of extensive offshore oil reserves by ExxonMobil, leading to substantial production, has not only spurred growth in the energy sector but has also catalyzed broader economic development across multiple industries.

The government continues to promote Guyana as a prime destination for investment in many sectors, insisting that Guyana needs big business in oil and non-oil sectors to build the economy that it envisions.

Rising demand for UK goods in Guyana and increased imports from Guyana to the UK are set to sustain the upward trajectory of bilateral trade relations. Guyana’s gas reserves position the nation as a potential energy security partner for the UK. Both countries fortified their partnership with a recent agreement, accompanied by the UK’s visa waiver for Guyanese nationals. Direct flights commenced last year.
