Dear Editor,

ExxonMobil Guyana’s US$100 million investment in STEM education comes at a defining moment in Guyana’s history. As our country grows as a major energy producer, the most important resource we must develop is not oil, but people.

This initiative has the potential to equip Guyanese youth with the skills needed to lead in science, engineering, and innovation. In a country experiencing rapid growth, these skills will be critical for careers not only in energy but also in technology, agriculture, infrastructure, and other emerging industries.

But its true value will not be measured simply by the dollars invested, but in doors opened. I look forward to students in hinterland and rural communities having the same opportunities as those on the coast and the investment translating into clear pathways to training, careers, and leadership for young Guyanese, not just promises on paper.

STEM education is more than a corporate programme. It is an investment in the next generation of Guyanese problem-solvers, engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. If implemented with transparency, equity, and long-term commitment, this initiative can help ensure Guyana’s future is shaped by the talent, creativity, and ambition of its own people.

The opportunity is here. The focus now must be on ensuring this investment creates real opportunities for young people across Guyana.

Sincerely,

Leah October
