The Liza Unity has become the first floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel to receive the SUSTAIN-2 notation from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), SBM Offshore announced on March 12.
SUSTAIN-2 is the next level in ABS’s vessel sustainability program, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It builds on the SUSTAIN-1 notation, which Liza Unity received in 2021 for pollution control and waste management, by incorporating low-carbon fuel usage and human-centered design.
“ABS continues to work closely with our clients to develop innovative solutions for new market challenges,” ABS Senior Vice President for Global Offshore, Miguel Hernandez said. “With the award of SUSTAIN-2, we are proud to continue to support SBM Offshore and their comprehensive strategy to address sustainability considerations.”
Alex Glenn, Chief Operating Officer at SBM Offshore said: “We are very proud that Liza Unity has become the first FPSO to be awarded the advanced SUSTAIN-2 notation by the ABS. This achievement highlights SBM Offshore’s commitment to protecting the environment by adhering to stringent standards for emissions reduction, pollution management and life cycle sustainability.”

The Liza Unity, owned by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited and operated by SBM Offshore, is the second FPSO built for Exxon’s Stabroek Block development in Guyana.
It was the first FPSO delivered under SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward® program. Two other vessels currently operate at the Stabroek Block alongside the Liza Unity FPSO – Liza Destiny and Prosperity, all built by SBM Offshore.
ABS, which classed the first FPSO in U.S. waters in 1978, continues to provide safety and sustainability guidance for the evolving FPSO market.
