Climate TRACE (which tracks real-time atmospheric carbon emissions) reports that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for January and February 2025 have seen a slight decrease in emissions from global fossil fuel operations.

According to the independent body jointly founded by a global coalition of nonprofits, tech companies, and universities, in January, fossil fuel operations emitted a total of 903.31 million tons (mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (COe). This indicated a slight decrease of 0.09% compared to the same period in 2024.

Fossil fuel emissions totaled 870.79 mt COe in February 2025, pointing to another reduction. This time, 0.39% compared to 2024.

For January to February 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, there was a decrease of 0.24% or 4.24 mt COe emitted from fossil fuel operations.

Overall, GHG emissions for February 2025 across the board totaled 5.04 billion tons (B tons) COe, indicating a 0.47% decrease from 2024. Since 2024 had been a leap year, February was one day longer than February 2025, which accommodated an additional day of emissions.

January 2025 total GHG emissions equaled 5.26 B tons COe, a 0.59% decrease from the previous year.

Notably, December 2024 and January 2025 represent the first monthly declines in emissions year-over-year post-COVID-19.

In a 2024 press conference, Vice President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo said that even with six floating production, storage and offloading (FPSOs) vessels operating at peak production, Guyana’s oil operations would only utilize 7% of the 150 mt of emissions sequestered by its forests annually.
