Stena Carron has become the second Stena Drilling drillship to receive DNV’s Abate(P) notation, following its sister vessel, Stena DrillMAX. The notation recognizes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through technical and operational measures.

The DNV Abate(P) notation is a recognized industry standard for emissions abatement. It highlights best practices in reducing emissions as oil and gas operators and drilling contractors work toward net-zero targets. The notation acknowledges tangible progress in emission reduction.

Stena Drilling said it implemented several enhancements to improve energy efficiency, including real-time energy and emission monitoring, optimized pump control, elimination of extra fuel burning through new freshwater production plants and electric lube oil heaters, an EcoBoost accumulator system, and Energy Awareness training for all personnel. The company said it also adopted a certified ISO 50001 energy management system across its fleet.

“I’m delighted that we have achieved this notation for Stena Carron. We have made significant investments in equipment, training, and awareness in our fleet, and being awarded this Class notation aligns us well with our values of care, innovation, and performance,” Erik Rønsberg, Chief Executive Officer of Stena Drilling said in a company statement on March 20.

DNV also recognized the milestone, “The notation aims to help rig owners demonstrate their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from drilling operations and highlights the importance of both technical innovation and operational efficiency in achieving these reductions. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Stena.”
