The Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago has responded to Nutrien Ltd.’s announcement of a controlled shutdown of its ammonia and urea operations at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate, noting the importance of maintaining the country’s attractiveness to investors.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Chamber said Nutrien is a major investor and exporter of ammonia, and that its presence is vital to the strength of the downstream energy sector. It added that while it does not comment on commercial negotiations, the development underscores the importance of ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago remains an attractive, world-class destination for energy investment.

The Chamber also acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to address “long-standing gas supply and infrastructure challenges”, adding that it is encouraged by progress in new upstream projects. It said it stands ready to assist “in any way possible to find a swift resolution that safeguards jobs, investment, and the future of Point Lisas”.

In a public announcement on October 21, Nutrien cited port access restrictions imposed by the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago and “a lack of reliable, economic natural gas supply,” which it said has reduced free cash flow for its operations over time. The company said it will continue discussions with stakeholders and assess options for its other operations in Trinidad. Nutrien produces about 85,000 tonnes of ammonia and 55,000 tonnes of urea per month through its local facilities.

Despite the shutdown, the company said it expects to remain within its 2025 annual nitrogen sales outlook of 10.7 million to 11.2 million tonnes, supported by strong performance at its North American operations.

The shutdown takes effect from today, October 23.
