The University of Guyana (UG) has opened applications for its 2026/2027 academic year, with submissions running from March 30 to May 9, as demand grows for skilled workers to support the country’s expanding oil and gas sector.

Prospective students are being encouraged to apply early, particularly for courses expected to be oversubscribed.

Students sitting the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations are among those being encouraged to apply. UG noted that applicants should ensure the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) forwards results directly to the institution. Some programs may offer provisional acceptance pending final results.

The institution remains tuition-free for Guyanese students under a government policy that took effect on January 1, 2025. The policy covers Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes.

Offshore oil production continues to increase, driving demand for skills in engineering, environmental management and energy-related fields and placing added pressure on local institutions to train job-ready graduates.

UG expanded its academic offerings to help meet this demand.

In upstream activities, which include exploration, appraisal and production, the university offers an Associate of Science in Petroleum Engineering, a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Petroleum Engineering, and a Master’s program in Oil and Gas and Renewable Energy.
