Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Councilor Barney Crocket, is scheduled to visit Georgetown, Guyana this Friday (March 15). The visit is a follow-up to the Aberdeen Guyanese trade mission in November, last year.
This was disclosed recently by British High Commissioner to Guyana, Greg Quinn, during a courtesy call on Georgetown’s Mayor, Ubraj Narine, on Wednesday.
“One of the things that came from the trade mission was that the Lord Provost of Aberdeen indicated that he would like to come down and visit, but also sign an MoU between Aberdeen and Georgetown,” the High Commissioner said.
He also noted that one of the focuses of the visit is to build alliances in the area of oil and gas.
Apart from that, Quinn said, “Talks will also focus on the development of the broader industry; it’s about what else you can do as a community, support the local industries and beyond.”
Quinn underscored that Georgetown and Aberdeen share many commonalities.
He said, “Up until the advent of oil and gas, Aberdeen was a city that really wasn’t as developed as it could be and so the provision of oil and gas allowed Aberdeen to develop socially, economically, and culturally. So there’s experience there; things that they did right and things that they did wrong, which I think they would like to pass on to Georgetown.”
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen is an ancient office with its roots in the 13th century. The Lord Provost acts as Convener of the City Council, Civic Head and Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeen.
Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland with an offshore petroleum industry. It has long been touted as the ‘oil capital of Europe’ with years of experience in the oil industry, dating back to the mid-20th century.
